In an exciting initiative aimed at bridging the gap between academia and practical quantum technologies, the CARLA 360 – Quantum Experience event was held on October 24, 2024, at the QUTE Pavilion of Quantum Technologies at Institute of Physics, Slovak Academy of Sciences. Organised in collaboration with the International Laser Center (ILC) of SCSTI, this event was designed specifically for students, and young researchers from various disciplines, providing them with a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge quantum technologies and gain firsthand experience in the field.
Objective and Structure
The primary objective of the CARLA 360 event was to introduce participants to the groundbreaking work being conducted at the Research Center for Quantum Information (RCQI) at IP SAS. The event focused on key areas such as photonics and cryogenic systems, which are essential for advancing quantum communication.
The program featured a combination of practical workshop and guided tour. Participants had the chance to engage in hands-on experiments, allowing them to explore the fundamental principles of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) while gaining insights into the underlying technologies that drive quantum information science.
Highlights of the Program
- Talk and Discussion with Prof. Vladimír Bužek: The event began with an inspiring talk by Prof. Vladimír Bužek, the founder of the RCQI. His insights into the evolution of quantum research and the future of quantum technologies in Slovakia set a motivational tone for the participants.
- Guided Tour: The event included guided tour of the RCQI facilities, showcasing state-of-the-art equipment. Highlights included:
- The photonics lab featuring an entangled photon source, which is crucial for various quantum applications.
- The cryogenic system, essential for maintaining the conditions necessary for quantum experiments.
- The ‘Bob’ node of the Slovak national quantum infrastructure, illustrating the collaborative efforts in building a robust quantum network in Slovakia.
- Practical Workshops: The workshops were designed to provide attendees with a tangible understanding of quantum technologies. Participants learned about QKD and its implications for secure communication, a critical area in today’s digital landscape.
Impact and Future Directions
The CARLA 360 – Quantum Experience not only provided participants with valuable insights into the realm of quantum technologies but also fostered a collaborative atmosphere where emerging scientists could connect and share ideas. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to education and innovation in the field of quantum science, preparing the next generation of researchers for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
